Human rights in Asia : a reassessment of the Asian values debate
Author: Damien Kingsbury; Leena Avonius
Publisher: New York : Palgrave Macmillan, 2008.
Edition/Format: Book : Conference publication : English : 1st edView all editions and formats
Summary:
"This book offers a critical reassessment of the 'Asian values' debate, which dominated the human rights discourse in the late 1990s, and a reappraisal of the human rights situation in Asia since then. In this book Asian and non-Asian scholars contextualize the 'Asian values' debate and examine in what ways the issues raised then continue to trouble Asian societies. Human rights are seen both in the context of political developments in individual Asian countries as well as in relation to global issues such as the Global War on Terror. The book challenges the reader to critically examine human rights rhetoric and practice both in Asia and globally."--

Asian values and human rights : a Confucian communitarian perspective
Author: William Theodore De Bary
Publisher: Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 1998.
Edition/Format: Book : EnglishView all editions and formats
Summary:
"Asian values" is a concept advanced by some authoritarian regimes to differentiate an Asian model of development, supposedly based on Confucianism, from a Western model identified with individualism, liberal democracy, and human rights. Highlighting the philosophical development of Confucianism as well as the Chinese historical experience with community organization, constitutionalism, education, and women's rights, Wm. Theodore de Bary argues that while the Confucian sense of personhood differs in some respects from Western libertarian concepts of the individual, it is not incompatible with human rights, but could, rather, enhance them.

The East Asian challenge for human rights
Author: Joanne R Bauer; Daniel Bell
Publisher: Cambridge, UK ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 1999.
Edition/Format: Book : EnglishView all editions and formats
Summary:
"The "Asian values" argument within the international human rights debate holds that not all Asian states can be or should be expected to protect human rights to the same degree due to varying levels of economic, political, and legal development and to differing cultural views on the virtues and necessity of freedom. This position of "cultural relativism," often used by authoritarian governments in Asia to counter charges of human rights violations, has been dismissed by many Western and Asian human rights advocates as a weak excuse. The East Asian Challenge for Human Rights moves beyond the politicized rhetoric that has dogged this debate to identify the more persuasive contributions by East Asian intellectuals to the evolving international debate on human rights." "The editors of this book argue that critical intellectuals in East Asia have begun to chart a middle ground between the extreme, uncompromising ends of this argument."--BOOK JACKET. Read less
